Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills. Competitors use interdisciplinary forms of fighting techniques that include striking, wrestling, and grappling disciplines to their strategic and tactical advantages.
The roots of Mixed Martial Arts can be traced back to ancient Greek ‘Pankration’, which was introduced into the Olympic Games in 648 B.C. The most modern form of MMA was popularized in Japan with Pride FC, and in the United States (and now the world) with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the UFC.
Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, with time, and with having so many different disciplines facing off against each other, the ‘hybrid’ discipline of MMA was incubated to harvest the effective techniques of the otherwise discrete disciplines into one. It is not uncommon to find modern MMA fighters incorporating varied disciplines such as Muay Thai, Greco-Roman Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into their game.
